Presentation

The School of Education of Viseu was the first organic unit from a Polytechnic Institute to start functioning in Portugal. In 1983 the first teacher training degree courses began in the ancient Escola do Magistério Primário, a former primary school. Still functioning in this emblematic building of the city of Viseu, the School of Education integrates the group of the five organic units that constitute the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, assuming its vocation in the scientific, cultural, artistic and technical training of qualified professionals, in a compromise with services rendered to the community, research and the strengthening of partnership networks with regional, national and international entities, aiming at developing projects and activities of common interest.

The challenge of new contexts and training paradigms in higher education has made the School of Education adapt itself and develop. Thus, it has adapted itself to the Bologna Process and diversified its activity according to the needs of the community. Its training offer, which integrates Postgraduate Courses, 3 Higher Technical Professional Courses, 7 Bachelor’s Courses (1st cycle of studies) and 13 Master’s Courses (2nd cycle of studies), focuses on the teacher training field, the School of Education founding matrix, but also on the fields of social education, environmental education, performing arts, cultural dynamics, sports and physical activity, arts and multimedia, media studies, marketing, advertising and public relations.

The School of Education has, over the years, collaborated in the training of teachers, coordinating, at the regional level, several projects and organizing non-degree training courses, suitable to the local needs.

The signing of protocols with school groupings, town halls, parish councils, cultural institutions, newspapers and radios, aiming at hosting students’ training practice and promoting the implementation of partnerships and projects that contribute to the sustainable development of the region where the School of Education is located, has been a constant concern. International cooperation and the mobility of students, staff and teachers are also determinant factors as far as the quality of teaching and learning is concerned.

The School of Education also values the promotion of research and of the training of its faculty. Most teachers were members of the Centre for the Study of Education, Technologies and Health (CSETH) of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, a decisive factor for the development of research applied to the training areas of the School of Education.
